Italo Calvino (1923 - 85) is
an Italian journalist and writer
of short stories and novels. His
best-known works include the
novels Invisible Cities and If on
a Winter's Night a Traveller. He
is the most-translated
contemporary Italian writer.
Calvino was made Honorary
Member of the American Academy in 1975 and the following year he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for European Literature. This short story is taken from his collection Numbers in the Dark .
